ABOUT THE BOOK
Shortlisted for the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize 2013
An old woman sits alone in Gorizia, north-eastern Italy. She is waiting to be reunited with her son. He was fathered by an S.S. officer and stolen from her sixty-two years before by the Nazi authorities during the German occupation.
By focusing on the experiences of one individual, Drndić engages head-on with the traumatic history of WWII and the Holocaust and deals unsparingly with the massacre of Jews in Trieste's concentration camp.
A literary collage comprising photographs, scraps of poetry, interviews and testimonies from the Nuremberg Trials, it is a formally daring work of immense power and scope.
Translated from the Croatian by Ellen Elias-Bursać.

The Depopulation
Marina Closs
From a major new talent in Latin American literature comes a tale of cultures, languages, spirits, and the natural world on the brink of transformation “Of all the happy, hermitic lands, the Guayrá was the jewel.” So begins this polyphonic wonder of a novel set in a 17th-century Jesuit mission founded within the wild South American subtropics by the mystical and intense Father Ruiz and his assistant Father Maceta.
Lazar
Nelio Biedermann
The snow of the dying century still lay on the edge of the dark forest when Lajos von Lazar, the translucent child with water-blue eyes, first glimpsed the man he would believe to be his father for his whole life and beyond.
