ABOUT THE BOOK
In medieval times, Christmas was not a single day but a twelve-day festival of feasts and saints’ days, running from 25 December to 5 January – a time of celebration and reflection that carried people through to the rebirth of the year.
This collection revives that ritual with a carefully chosen story for each of the twelve days, mapping the old celebrations onto their twentieth-century equivalents: courtly masques become pantomimes, banquets become festive dinner parties, winter hunts become countryside dog walks. With stories by Jeanette Winterson, L. M. Montgomery, Sylvia Townsend Warner, Patricia Highsmith, Eleanor Farjeon and others, it celebrates the season’s timeless themes of love, family, connection and new beginnings.

Candide and Other Stories
Voltaire
Candide is the most famous of Voltaire’s ‘philosophical tales’, in which he combined witty improbabilities with the sanest good sense.
The Houseguest and Other Stories
Amparo Dávila
The first collection in English of a master storyteller from Mexico. Like those of Kafka, Poe, Leonora Carrington or Shirley Jackson, Amparo Dávila’s stories are unsettling, mesmerizing and expertly crafted.
