ABOUT THE BOOK
In Notes from the Underground (1864), a bitter, nameless former civil servant speaks from his 'underground' corner of St Petersburg, attacking reason, progress and himself with furious wit. It is one of the founding texts of modern fiction.
The Gambler (1866), written at speed to pay off Dostoevsky's own debts, follows a young tutor in a German spa town who falls under the spell of the roulette table and of the woman he loves. This Oxford World's Classics edition, translated by Jane Kentish, brings the two short novels together with an introduction and notes.
