ABOUT THE BOOK

A handsome hardback edition of the private notebooks of Marcus Aurelius, Emperor of Rome from 161 to 180 AD and the last of the ‘Five Good Emperors’.

Never meant for publication, the Meditations were jotted down by campfires and in military tents on the Roman frontier, during a reign marked by near-constant war and a devastating plague. In them Marcus, a follower of Stoic philosophy, works through the ‘spiritual exercises’ that helped him cultivate patience, generosity, self-knowledge and calm – advice on resilience, moderation and living in agreement with nature that feels as relevant today as it did two thousand years ago.

This edition uses a modernised version of George Long’s classic translation, with an introduction by the Stoicism expert Donald Robertson.
