ABOUT THE BOOK
Longlisted for the Man Booker International Prize 2018
Richard is a classics professor in Berlin who has just retired. He has spent his life among books, though his own are still sitting in packing boxes. Then, on Oranienplatz, he comes across a tent camp set up by asylum seekers from Africa, and slowly begins to get to know the men who live there.
As he listens to their stories, Richard starts to question his own sense of belonging, in a city that was itself once divided into “us” and “them”. Go, Went, Gone is both a sharp look at race, privilege and nationality and a moving portrait of an ageing man searching for meaning in his life.
Translated from the German by Susan Bernofsky.
