ABOUT THE BOOK
Bento Santiago, nicknamed Dom Casmurro by his enemies, has become a recluse in old age, reading and mourning the past in a house built as a copy of his childhood home. Inspired by the painted busts of Nero, Augustus and Caesar on his walls, he decides to write his own story, which he is sure is one of epic proportions. Or so he believes.
He begins with the November afternoon he fell in love with Capitu, the girl next door in a once-fashionable corner of Rio de Janeiro. They overcome every obstacle and win their happy ending, until Bento is consumed by suspicion and jealousy. Charming, obsessive and utterly unreliable, he is one of literature's great antiheroes. Widely considered Machado de Assis's masterpiece and a forerunner of twentieth-century Latin American fiction, Dom Casmurro is a subversive dark comedy set in a rapidly changing Rio.
Translated from the Portuguese by Margaret Jull Costa and Robin Patterson.
