ABOUT THE BOOK

Moscow, the 1920s. The celebrated surgeon Professor Preobrazhensky takes in a stray dog from the street and, in a daring experiment, transplants into it the glands of a dead petty criminal. The dog slowly turns into a man — crude, foul-mouthed and thoroughly at home in the new Soviet order — and the professor's comfortable life is turned upside down.

Written in 1925 and banned in the Soviet Union for decades, Mikhail Bulgakov's comic novella is a sharp satire of the revolution's dream of creating a 'new man'. This Alma Classics edition is newly translated and annotated by Hugh Aplin.
